Registered nursing is one of the largest growing occupations in the world, and theirs a few different reasons for the continued demand. Not only is there a shortage of practicing nurses, but there is also a shortage of nursing educators. A shortage occurs when the demand for nurses is higher than the number of registered nurses available to work. As the current nursing shortage grows, the pressure continues to intensify for nursing programs to increase enrollment capacity to fill the vacant positions.

What is causing the nursing shortage?

There is an abundant number of registered nurses either retiring or pursuing different professions. There has been a notable increase in nurses taking early retirement reducing an already depleted work force. The ANA estimates that one million nurses will retire between 2021 and 2030. Not only is the profession expected to lose a large number of nurses, but when experienced nurses leave, healthcare organizations are left to mitigate the threat of lost knowledge. Nurses will leave with the critical experience and knowledge they’ve accumulated, leaving enormous shoes to fill for graduating nurses.

The second main culprit for the nursing shortage is that people are living longer due to advancing medical science. The U.S. has the largest number of Americans over the age of 65. As the population continues to age, the number of health conditions, chronic illnesses and co-morbidities requiring healthcare agencies to increase staff to provide quality care.

The third element for nursing shortages is the pre-licensure nursing education capacity. There is a direct link between the nursing shortage and nursing education. According the AACN, nursing schools in the U.S. turned away 80,000 qualified applicants due to an inadequate number of faculty, clinical sites, academic space, and budget.

The final contributor to highlight is nursing burnout. With the nursing shortage and the complexity of healthcare needs, many nurses are overworked and emotionally exhausted. Nurses are choosing to leave the profession. If the nursing shortage is not addressed, nurses will continue to leave the profession due to burnout. States with the highest amount of nursing vacancies include California, Texas, and New York.

How Caring Bees HealthCare is dealing with nursing shortage:

Caring Bees HealthCare, along with healthcare agencies across the country are trying to recruit nurses to fill vacant positions. As a homecare agency we provide flexibility for our nurses with scheduling. This is a way for us to provide our nurses with the ability to avoid burnout, as they can set their schedules at their convenience. We are also turning our attention to hiring nurses that have recently graduated and providing further training with our experienced Rn’s. We hope that these two strategies will help us avoid nursing shortages in the future in our organization, so we can provide more care for our patients in need.

in August 2021. We took the time to interview Liam to gain better insight to what led him to where he is today. Liam Sullivan attended Coastal Carolina University for his undergraduate degree in Marketing and continued his education at the University for his MBA in HealthCare Administration. Liam stated “I loved my time at Coastal Carolina University. I had grown up in a small town called Ipswich, Massachusetts and always loved making connections with people and the phycological aspects of advertising. I wanted to challenge myself and move somewhere I didn’t know much about and make new connections. I knew the study of marketing was a passion of mine and I decided to pursue it as a career”.

During his undergraduate years Liam worked while attending Coastal Carolina, working as a sales representative for a startup retail company Dapper Joe, and later on a time-share salesman for the Marriott. “As a freshman I took a job as a sales representative at Dapper Joe, and it turned out to be a life changing experience. I was empowered to create sales scripts for myself and fellow colleagues, gained experience in creating lasting relationships with clientele, and became very comfortable with the art of cold calling. Later on, in my junior year I started working with the Marriott selling time shares. This experience prepared me for face to face business interactions and the ability to identify which package matched a specific customer. There is a saying in the industry that If you can sell time shares, you can sell anything!”

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Liam decided to continue his education at Coastal Carolina University to pursue and MBA in HealthCare Administration. “When I graduated, we were in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, and there was a lot of uncertainty going on in the workforce. I had lost my mother at a young age to breast cancer and I always thought it would be cool to make a difference in the Healthcare industry in her honor. So, after some consideration I decided to pursue my MBA.” During his education in the MBA program, Liam worked as a graduate assistant for the graduate studies department. “Being a graduate assistant was very beneficial while pursuing my MBA, I created a new testimonial page for the University, created and edited content for social media platforms, and gained experience with using a variety of CRM systems.”

After graduating Liam decided he would move back home to Massachusetts and found himself searching for Marketing positions in the HealthCare industry. “I knew I wanted to move home because all of my family and friends still reside here. Plus, I just love the state of Massachusetts and the city of Boston, which is a city known for providing great healthcare services”. During his job search Liam found an opening for Caring Bee Healthcare and thought he would be a great fit. “I had a few offers on the table but I was really intrigued by the opportunity to apply my skills here at Caring Bees. Meeting the COO Alka Swarup I could see she had a great understanding of the industry as a whole, and really had a good handle on how to maneuver the operations. I also saw plenty of opportunities to help have an impact in building the Caring Bees brand, so I decided to join the team”.

I am still in the early stages of the strategy put in place, but we are off to a great start. When asked about his time at Caring Bees thus far, Liam stated “I’m loving my time here at Caring Bees. The staff is incredible, and I have learned a lot about the home healthcare industry in a short amount of time. I’m looking forward to future accomplishments I believe we can reach, and striving for improvement each day!”

Today, we are able to provide not just high quality Nursing but also professional Health Aides, Physical Therapists, and Occupational Therapists that are delivered right to the comfort of your own home.

The dictionary defines homecare as: Any support service that allows a person to live safely in their home. For us at Caring Bees, homecare goes beyond a service. It is a combination of compassion, trust, and communication that ultimately builds a holistic relationship to all our patients.

  Who is homecare really for?

The good news is that everyone and anyone can benefit from homecare. Let's dive into all the different ways you and your family can benefit from your caring professional.

The first way we can take advantage of homecare is with our Nurses and health aides. Home nurses are passionate individuals that are highly trained to personalize an at home care routine for their patients who suffer from a chronic illness or who are recovering from an accident.

Homecare nurses treat those who are diabetic, those with respiratory illness, they can provide rehabilitative care, they can supervise medications, they can provide treatment and injections, they are trained for wound care, they can teach family-patient health, they are fully able to draw blood and provide lab work, they can provide dressing changes, and IV treatments. Nurses also offer their services for the following:

                    and more..

Another way to take advantage of homecare is with rehabilitation services. At home rehabilitation can bring your family peace of mind. Our staff will work with you, your family and physician to put together a plan specifically tailored to meet your unique needs and circumstances. Here are some options for homecare services available to you:

      PHYSICAL THERAPISTS:

These professionals will come to your home to provide physical rehabilitative therapy such as exercise, weight training and instruction on the use of equipment.

      OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST:

They are fully committed to getting people back to their productive selves, and thus provides for detailed, high-quality services addressing patients’ physical, mental or cognitive diagnoses. Getting back to work isn’t just vital to one’s livelihood, but hugely imperative toward an individual’s peace of mind.

      SPEECH THERAPISTS:

These individuals use patience and focus to help patients in improving communication disorders or swallowing issues. From examining a patient's speech and language components, to correcting food consumption abnormalities.

Lastly, homecare can be very beneficial to you if you were just involved in a worker compensation incident or you have been injured at work. Employers are responsible for providing you with Workers Compensation benefits by law.

Dealing with work-related injuries on your own can be challenging for you and your family. Adding a home care service to your recovery plan, can shorten the recovery time and the stress that has been abruptly brought into your household.

Homecare is a revolutionary way to heal from the comfort of the place you love the most in this world. The positive effects of being in a familiar place, with the people you know and trust can be very healing mentally and physically. Give yourself and your family the opportunity and peace of mind to explore all the options homecare has to offer. We are sure the rewards will be a fuller, less stressful, and longer life.

Older Bostonians bring so many dynamic experiences to our community, and we want more people to see that and embrace it."

I will share my story, over twenty years ago, my mother was diagnosed with cancer and sadly I lost her few years later and it totally broke my heart. She was in her early 40s! She was in her 30s and she did not think she was at risk. It is important to share stories and raise awareness as younger women generally do not consider themselves to be at risk for breast cancer. However, breast cancer can strike at any age: 5% of breast cancer cases occur in women under 40 years of age. All women should be aware of their personal risk factors for breast cancer."

Why is Home Healthcare Substituting Nursing Homes

For many years, nursing homes have dominated the market as far as personalized, post hospitalization care goes. Now we are seeing a trend where Home Healthcare agencies are increasing their market share. Making Home Healthcare the future of personalized outpatient care.

, the Center for Medicare Advocacy reports that the nursing home industry blames their financial struggle on low Medicaid rates, stating that rates are "too low to even cover nursing home cost".

The article points out that public policy pushes to spend less on institutionalized home care, such as nursing homes. Instead, policy has been created to redirect public funds towards alternative home health care providers, like VNAs and assisted living facilities. However, low Medicaid rates are not alone responsible for a decrease on the quality of care, or the lack there of, provided by nursing homes.

In reality, nursing homes struggle to keep up with the amount of patients they have and their medical needs. The growing "Baby Boomer" generation in need of nursing home healthcare, is putting a strain on the diminishing available beds at nursing homes. The increase in demand and the shortage of supply, creates a negative trend, which ultimately suppresses the quality of care that nursing home staff members can provide to their patients.

One of the main roles of our government is to ensure that tax payer money is being used correctly. In order to do so, nursing homes are constantly being put through audits and quality control checks. Unfortunately, government agencies have failed to monitor the financial viability of many nursing homes.

The Rosewood Care Center had received funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUB). According to Goldstein, the HUB's initiative to provide funding to nursing homes, was meant to make it more accessible for such organizations to receive loans at a much lower interest rate. The goal of the HUB program was to increase the amount of affordable nursing home beds in the community. Unfortunately, due to inadequate financial management, Rosewood Care Centers failed to meet their obligations and did not make any of their loan payments. The result was a waste of public funds, and a senior community left with out care.

One of the biggest concerns facing nursing homes today, is that they can not keep their patients healthy enough to not be re-hospitalized. Financial hardship prevents nursing homes from being fully staffed, and many preventable health conditions are sending their patients back to the emergency room. According to

Regulating agencies such as medicare and medicaid, have many safeguards in place, in order to prevent re-hospitalization of recently discharged patients. Unfortunately doing so has raised additional concerns. For example, nursing homes with a negative track record of patient care and re-hospitalization rates, are now afraid of sending patients to the hospital as their conditions deteriorates. In essence, bad nursing homes avoid sending patients back to the hospital, because they are afraid of the consequences. Doing so puts patients at risk because it prevents them from getting the care they need. On the other hand, nursing homes which have a good patient care record and an acceptable re-hospitalization rate, do so because they ensure that every patient gets attentive medical care.

Second, lets review the benefits of Home Healthcare. As previously mentioned, one of the biggest reasons nursing homes are failing is because of insufficient staffing, resulting in an increase of re-hospitalization rates. On the other hand, Home healthcare allows you to receive personalized one-on-one care, which ensures that your medical needs are not being overlooked. According to the US National Library of Medicine National Institute of Health,

home care decreases costs, improves health outcomes, and reduces hospital stay

However, choosing the correct home healthcare agency is extremely important. In some cases, bad home care agencies, can make mistakes that will cause problems similar to those facing nursing homes today.

Common goals for all of us are to grow old, retire, go away on vacation, but most importantly be

        healthy and independent

    .

Unfortunately, with aging also come unfavorable medical conditions. Medical conditions like Diabetes, CHF, Arthritis, and Stroke which are some of the most common among the 65 and older population. Conditions which come up unexpectedly.

Unexpected events can send our life's into a turmoil and can be hard to deal with for any household or individual. Which is why it is important to begin

         planning and researching early.

Many medical conditions that we encounter during our later years are hereditary. If your parents, siblings or grandparents suffered from a particular illness in their lifetime, then it is very likely that you may also encounter similar health issues. So early testing and monitoring is key for prevention.

Do not let an easily diagnosable or preventable illness blindside you

    .

Early detection of medical conditions that you may be prone to developing, allows you to prevent and plan ahead if needed. Planning ahead will allow you to set up a healthcare plan that allows you to be in charge and proactive with your medical condition. Doing so will allow you to maintain your independence with minor alterations, but independent nevertheless.

Sometimes, regardless of our proactive prevention and detection of medical conditions, we just can not avoid them. In such cases,

coming up with a comprehensive medical plan with your doctor will directly affect your quality of life.

By this point you or your doctor may consider home healthcare.

Home healthcare, allows you to receive personalized care in the comfort of your home. In many cases, home healthcare can be cheaper then inpatient facilities, such us hospitals or nursing homes. Agencies like
